March 9 -This week we will be doing some writing about leprecauns and St. Patrick's day. We will also review r controlled vowels as well as the oi, aw, ee,oo,at,igh and an letter combinations.
March 2 - Students will be looking at the question-answer relationship. They will be learning how some questions have their answers right in the text, while others require a little more digging. They will be also learning how to answer in a complete sentence using words from the question in their answer.
February 24 - This week we are looking at nouns and verbs. We are completing "Making Words" as a whole group.
February 18 - We will be reading and discussing books about Ruby Bridges, Viola Desmond and Harriet Tubman this week. Students will learn all about their important journey and how they helped change history.
February 10 - We are still looking at procedural texts. This week we will be moving into independent writing.
February 3 - We are beginning our investigation into procedural texts. We will be reading them and learning the format this week. We will move into shared and partner procedural writing. For this format, they need a title, a goal (what are you trying to make), materials list and step in sequential order.
January 27 - This week we will be looking at two things. First is completing a shared writing for part of the Great Canadian Valentine Swap. We will be swapping letters and Valentine's with 20 other schools across Canada. We will be showcasing what our school has to offer and all about the community we live in. In return, we will be receiving letters learning all about their schools. The second thing we will be focused on is reading compehension and answering questions about short texts.
January 20 - Our focus this week is on media lteracy and specially audience. We are looking at how different media forms are geared towards different groups.
January 13 - This week we will be focusing on reading comprehension. We are looking at a reading passages independently and being able to find information within the passage.
January 6 - This week we will have 2 focuses; compound words and making connections. We will make connections to books we read and the world around us. We will investigate the differences between a thin and thick connection.
December 9 - This week will be our wrap up of our letter unit. The students did a great job on their Santa letters...I hope you enjoyed reading them. The original was sent along to the North Pole!
December 2 - We are continuing our investigation into letter writing. This week we will continue with our penpal writing and begining our Santa letters.
November 25 - We are looking at letters for the next 3 weeks. We will be looking at reading as well as writing them. We are focused on proper structure of a letter that includes a heading (date), greeting, body, closing and a signature. We will be writing letters to penpals in the other grade 2 class as well as writing letters to Santa.
November 18 - We are reviewing adjectives to enhance our writing. We are also focusing on reviewing our reading strategies.
November 11 - This week we are looking at media literacy. We are looking at what is media and how to create a poster advertisment

November 4 - Our focus this week will be on visualizing. We will connect this to our 5 senses to visualize as we read.
October 28 - We will be wrapping up our recounts this week. We had a great start in our planning process last week and the students were shown how to move from their planner and into their writing by adding onto the information in the graphic organizer.
October 21 - This week we will be completing recounts. We will start with doing an oral recount of the event we brought in the picture for. We will then move into making a plan for our recount and then finally producing a piece of writing.
October 15 - We will begin our focus on recount texts this week. We will begin this week by reading and finding the different parts of a recount within texts. A recount is a text that tells about an event that has already happened. There are 4 parts to a recount:
1 - Title
2 - Orientation sentence(s) - There is 1-2 sentences that tell the reader what the event is and when you did it. You could also add who you were with.
3 - Sequence of events - This is where you tell the reader what you did in order. Transition words are used like first, then, next. Verbs are in the past tense.
4 - Personal comment - This is where you give 1-2 sentences about how you felt about the event.
October 7 - This week we will be reading and responding to a variety of Thanksgiving based books. We will be completing some writing tasks including a class book.
September 30 - We will be looking again at proper sentence structure in our journal writing. We are also reviewing the digraphs sh, ch and th.
September 16 - This week we will continue looking at retelling stories. We will move into completing these independently and writing out our answers.
September 9 - The students will be looking at retelling a story using the 5 Finger Rule. (see in practice activites for example) We will be working on doing retells orally this week.
September 5 - This week we are learning how to build stamina when reading independently. We are also reviewing how to write a complete sentence properly. The criteria is: captials at the beginning, lowercase throughout, finger spaces between words and punctuation at the end.
