March 9 - This week, we are looking at using thinking skills to answer word problems. We will be looking at using student generated strategies to solve the problems.
March 2 - We are moving into money this week. Students will be exposed to all coins and their value. They will add and subtract money amounts as well as making money amounts with the least amount of coins.
February 24 - This week we are looking at mass and capacity. We are investigating how much things weigh and how much containers hold.
February 18 - We are wrapping up looking at 3D solids and moving into looking at telling temperature.
February 10 - This week we will be investigating 3D solids. We will be looking at naming them and their properties, specifically numbers of edges and vertices and if they can stack, roll or slide.
February 3 - We are reviewing skip counting this week and building on what we know to count to 200 by 2's, 5's and 10's. We will be counting by 25's to 100.
January 27 - We will be looking at fractions this week. The students will be looking at halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, etc.
January 20 - This week, our focus will be on repeating patterns. A pattern repeats at least times. We reviewed the words "core" and "attributes". The core is the part of the pattern that repeats. An attribute is what is changing in the pattern such as colour, size, shape, thickness and direction.
January 13 - We are continuing our look at repeated addition and multiplicaiton. We will move into looking at division as breaking into equal groups.
January 6 - We are beginning our week reviewing skip counting and finding numbers on a number line. We will also be moving into the beginning stages of multiplication. We will start that investigation as looking at repeated addition.
December 9 - The students started investigating surveys and graphs at the end of last week. This week, they will come up with their own survey question and complete it. They will then take their data and display it in 2 ways, a pictograph and a bar graph.
December 2 - As we worked with area last week, we will be moving into perimeter this week. We will be also only using non-standard units to measure with.
November 25 - This week we are looking at the concept of area. In grade 2, area is measured using only non-standard units.
November 18 - We are investigating place value and the composition and decomposition of numbers this week. We are looking at how in the number 47, the 4 doesn't stand for 4, it is 40 or 4 groups of 10. We are also looking at if you have 3 tens and 5 ones that makes 35, but so does 2 tens and 15 ones.
November 11 - This week we are working in 2D shapes. We are working with circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, pentagons, hexagons, septagons, and octagons. We will also be working with the terms polygons and quadrilaterals. Students will be introduced to the word vertices/vertex as opposed to corner.
November 4 - Our focus this week will be equality in number expressions. We will look at both addition and subtraction expressions. For example 2 + 8 = 5 + 5 or 12 - 8 = 6 - 2. We will be reviewing all the ways you can make different numbers to begin.
October 28 - This week we will be using the subtraction strategies we learned last week and will be applying them to word problems. We will use CUBES again to help support our understanding.
October 21 - We will be looking at subtraction strategies this week. We will look at counting back, using tools such as number lines and additing on. Adding on is where you start at the lower number and add up to the bigger and figure out how much the difference was between the two numbers.
October 15 - Our focus this week will be on probem solving with addition. We will also look at some fact fluency. We will introduce CUBES as one possible way to help organize thinking to answer a problem type question. There is a graphic in the practice activites that explains CUBES.
October 7 - This week will be reviewing and introducing addition strategies. We will begin with counting all and counting on. These strategies work best when at least one of the digits in the question is a single-digit. We will then move into others like using tools such as number lines and hundreds charts and others like making ten and using doubles/near doubles.
September 30 - We are beginning to look at non-standard measurement. Non-standard measurement is when we use objects that are not standard untis such as a centimetre. We will be measuring with pencils, papers clips, books etc. We will also look at what the most appropriate unit would be when measuring different items. For example we could use a paper clip to measure the height of a book, but it would not be the best choice to measure the height of the door.
September 23 - We are continuing counting by 2's, 5's, 10's and 25's. Please practice skip counting by these numbers as it will help in addition and subtraction in the upcoming units.
September 16 - We are looking at counting strategies this week, specifcally a review of counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. The students will be introdiced to counting by 25's. I have attached some vidoes that can help practice.
September 9 - This week's focus will be on sorting. In grade 2, students are expected to sort using 2 attributes. Examples of attributes are colour, size, shape, thickness, etc. Students will also be introduced to the venn diagram. Please see the attachment in the practice activites.
September 5 - This week we are reviewing different ways of representing a number. We can represent it in an addition sentence, with tally marks, in ten frames, etc.
